The Department of Marketing offers the internship program to allow students to earn academic credit through real world experience. Marketing 393 is a course by which students learn first-hand while employed in marketing positions. The real-world experience is valuable training and skill development for marketing and non-marketing majors.
Marketing 393 fulfills the credit of a required marketing course, an upper-level elective or the University Experiential Learning requirement. This course provides students a strong foundation for their future. Internships develop job-skills and introduce students into the corporate world.
The internship program benefits any student interested in obtaining valuable experience in the marketing industry. Students are given the opportunity to work with top Chicago area firms in advertising, marketing research, sales, promotions or public relations. Many internship positions provide financial compensation.

Not all internships are eligible for credit. Job descriptions of positions not secured through the Internship Office must be submitted for approval. Internship experiences must be oriented toward a marketing career. Advertising, marketing research, promotions, public relations and sales are all relevant fields. The job must have a valuable educational component and the sponsoring firm is required to provide a supervisor to guide, oversee and evaluate the intern.
Course Requirements
Work Duration: The student is required to work for the sponsoring firm a minimum of 100 hours or 10 hours a week.
Paper: A research paper on the firm is to be written. The student, intern supervisor and Dr. Kelly will mutually agree upon the specific subject and content.
Journal: A weekly journal of work activities is kept by the student. Guidelines for the journal are provided in the internship handbook.
Supervisor Review of the Paper: The intern supervisor will review the paper prior to handing it in.
Supervisor Evaluations: The intern’s work performance will be evaluated by their supervisor twice during the internship.
Student Evaluations: The student will evaluate the intern experience twice during the internship.
